Breaking the Victim Chain

There is a concept that we are all just victims of victims. This intrigues me greatly because it opens up the possibility of breaking the chain to find acceptance and forgiveness; both of which allow us to heal and move on. You will notice that I will not say it excuses abusive or detrimental behavior, it does not. It does, however, explain it just a bit, allowing for empathy. Excuse vs. Explanation They can sound the same, but are very different things and based on your individual perspective sometimes it is hard to know which one is which. I have a dear friend who has said many times that...

Personal GPS

Who wouldn’t love having a GPS for life? I mean think about it, a little voice saying take this job or date that person. Even better if it had auto-correct for when life gets confusing! So instead of dropping out of school you would have stayed, or you would have tried to open that art gallery or restaurant you dreamed of. Guess what? We do have a personal GPS for life; it is our inner voice, our personal truth, conscience, higher power, or whatever you like to call it. We do know when we encounter a choice that isn’t in our healthy wheel house, we just often refuse to acknowledge it...

Manners Matter

There are two kinds of people that stand out to me, the first is the one that walks blithely through a door a few paces in front of me and doesn’t pause at all to consider holding that door; the second is the one that not only holds the door but says hello and smiles. The person that just keeps going, I admittedly will grumble a few less than ladylike things under my breath before opening said door for my very capable self. The person that smiles and holds the door not only makes my day brighter at that moment, but I carry their act of kindness with me for a very long time. Gender nor age...

Why Not Me?!

Motivation is one word for a large idea with as many definitions as there are people living today. We all get up and get going for reasons that matter only to us; the trick is to get that to work for us and not against us. If not being a failure is your underlying motivation, well you are likely not to try anything no matter how much you say you want that career, partner, lifestyle, etc. because the whisper of ‘what if I fail?’ is playing over and over in your head like a stuck record, or a glitched MP3. Overall we are pretty basic creatures. If it feels good we tend to do it. If it...

Food and Love

A friend of mine recently said something that made me stop in my tracks. They said that they couldn’t wait until food was just fuel and not something pleasurable. This person has gone through quite a bit lately, including losing quite a bit of weight. Yet their take on food startled me. Let’s be realistic here, the human animal needs food, water and oxygen to function at all. So food is fuel yes, but it is a necessary fuel. Which brought me to my question of why the hell wouldn’t someone want to enjoy something that is necessary to life? Ours is a nation obsessed with weight, weight...

How far would you go for love? How about the ‘what wouldn’t I do for true love…’ concept? We are taught to think of love as the most powerful force known to man, yet it is completely undefinable. We all have very different ideas about love, what it is, what it means to us, what we will do to get it and why it matters so much to us. Falling in love is wonderful. It makes us feel good, energized, powerful, desirable, validated. Yet when it seems to go away we can spin in the exact opposite direction. Often we feel depressed, angry, powerless, unwanted and worthless. Then, there is the...
